Knitting a classic

My sister sent me a whole box full of yarn and all she asked for in return was that I knit a baby blanket for her to donate to her local hospital.  She even sent me the pattern, directions, really, and as soon as I started knitting it I recognized it.  I’m certain I have knit this particular blanket before.  It’s the Diagonal Comfort Blanket, or Farnsworth Blanket by Lion Brand Yarn.

It’s a square blanket knit on the diagonal.  The pattern has you cast on five stitches and start from there.  I did that, but didn’t like the 5-stitch edge.  If I’m knitting a square, I want pointed edges, so I only got a couple of rows in before I started again. with  modification.Instead of starting with five stitches, I just cast on one.

Row 1 – knit
Row 2 – knit front and back (kfb)
Row 3 – knit 2
Row 4 – knit 1, kfb, knit 1
Row 5 – knit 3
Row 6 – knit 2, kfb, knit 1
Row 7 – knit 4
Row 8 – knit 2, kfb, knit 2
Row 9 – knit 5

After that I just followed the directions. It’s mindless knitting, good for TV viewing when I have to pay attention to the story.  So far, it’s fit on my 10″ needles, but it eventually grows to 160 stitches.  I’ll have to switch to my 14 inchers or circulars, but for now I can knit on my favorite 10 inchers!!

Hi Evelyn! I actually got a few minutes of a break and thought I would POP in to see what you’ve been up too! That was super sweet of your sister to send you a box of yarn and that she only ask you to make one precious baby blanket in return – It looks so pretty and I love the colors!
